Tamil is a complex language and this is one of the main reasons why multiple encoding schemes have been created for the Tamil characters. This application lets you convert a text between the most used Tamil character encoding schemes.
NHM Converter comes with a very simple interface. It lets you open text files and convert their encoding, or write the text directly in its interface and save it to a text file with the encoding of your choice. Unfortunately, it can load only TXT text files and save only to TXT and RTF file formats. I would have appreciated if it could save to other file formats as well, such as DOC, DOCX or ODT.
Another thing that I like about this tool, besides the simple interface, is the fact that it supports quite a lot of encoding formats, such as the ubiquitous Unicode and Diacritic, or Tamil-specific ones such as TSCII, Bamini or Shreelipi.
In my book, NHM Converter deserves to be tried anytime you need to convert the encoding schemes of Tamil texts. This application is simple, free and it does its job well.
